The Importance of Elementary School Physical Education

Physical Education plays a critical role in educating the whole student. Educating both the mind and body can contribute directly to a student's success during these early years. As your child's Physical Education teacher, my goal is to provide not only activities that foster physical development through fundamental movements, team games and motor patterns, but I also strive to develop students as whole individuals through positive social interactions with their peers. Knowing that all students have various skills levels, games and activities at School #3 are created to provide success for students of all abilities. It is my goal to ensure that each child has an opportunity to reach his/her own developmental levels. Emphasis is not often placed on winning, rather participation and fair play. Students will participate in activities that are designed to help them understand the value of physical activity and its contribution toward a healthy lifestyle.


Regular Participation in a Quality Physical Education Program Will:
1. Prepare students with skills for future leisure pursuits.
2. Reduce risk of specific health problems.
3. Improve mental health.
4. Improve motor skills.
5. Reduce stress and increase energy.
6. Contribute to academic success.
7. Boost self-esteem.
8. Develop a sense of security with ones body.


Help your child to be successfully in Physical Education - REMIND THEM TO:
1. Wear proper athletic footwear and attire.  Sweats are allowed, however, must be in school uniform colors - Green, white, blue and/or grey.  Girls should avoid dresses on gym days.
2. Participate in all activities.
3. Do not put down other students.
4. Display good sportsmanlike behavior.
5. Follow all PE/Gym safety rules.
6. Come to class with a positive attitude.
7. Always give best effort.

LOOK WHAT I PLAY
Mrs, Cuneo would love to come and watch her students participate on their sports teams or hobby groups.  If your child is on a sports team or participates in a type of sport activity (dance, gymnastics, karate, ice skating etc...), please have them complete the "Look What I Play" slip located in the gym. Parents should fill out the form.  When filling out the information, please include a few dates this way I can plan ahead.  Students should then return slip to my office door pouch.  Looking forward to seeing you on the sidelines!

MILEAGE CLUB IS RETURNING FOR THE 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR!!
                                          
The Mileage Club will be returning for the 2018-2019 school year.  This club is open to 2nd and 3rd grade students! To become a member of this "fitness club", students will have to run laps around a designated area during recess. Students can run (or walk) as many laps as they choose during any extra time outside (recess or free time).  Each time a student completes a lap, a hole will be punched out on his/her foot shaped mileage marker.  Once a student has completed twenty laps, they will earn their Mileage Club lanyard with a colored foot token.  Different colored tokens will then be awarded based on miles completed, Ex. 5 miles, 10 miles, 15, miles etc... Any student who complete their miles will have their name on display on the bulletin board in the center hallway of the school.  The purpose of the Mileage Club is to foster students to become independent fitness enthusiast by taking the initiative to run or walk...the tokens are the added bonus and rewards for their hard work.
